Module 1 – Introduction to Autism
Typical Learning Time: 45 minutes.

  • Understand Autism and its Triad of impairments.
  • Identify some of the behavioural characteristics associated with Autism.
  • State the ongoing debates relating to the causes of Autism.
  • Understand the challenges faced by a person with Autism.

Module 2 – Laws and policies associated with supporting someone with an ASC
Typical Learning Time: 30 minutes.

  • Understand which laws and policies are important when you are supporting someone with ASC.
  • Recognise how to help the person understand relevant laws and policies.
  • Understand the term ‘safeguarding’.

Module 3 – Supporting Someone With An Autistic Spectrum Condition
Typical Learning Time: 60 minutes.

  • Know how to work collaboratively.
  • Understand how to help someone understand their own autism.
  • Know what routines, timetables and structures are important.
  • Understand how to match your support to the person’s needs.
  • Identify the importance of empathising with the person you support.
  • Understand what triggers anxiety and stress for the person you support.
  • List techniques that help the person you support to calm down.
  • Understand why it is important to support someone to take risks.
  • Understand why your own verbal and non-verbal communication is important.
  • Understand about preferred communication styles and know how to use them.

Module 4 – Supporting the Person with ASC through Good Practice
Typical Learning Time: 60 minutes.

  • Understand how to support someone’s communication.
  • Understand how to help a person with ASC protect themselves.
  • Know when to question decisions made by a person you support.
  • Know about the range of approaches, interventions and strategies.
  • Understand how to get advice on an approach, intervention or strategy.
  • Recognise the importance of working consistently and the effects of change and unpredictability on the person’s behaviour.
  • Recognise the importance of helping people to develop new skills and abilities that will enable them to communicate and function socially.
  • Know how to reflect on your own practice and where to go for help to do this.
  • Understand how to create and maintain a structured environment.
  • Indentify what is meant by providing support to enable the person you support and others through change.
  • Understand how to promote choice and control for the person you support, and how this might feel for the person.
  • Distinguish the difference between caring for someone and enabling someone.
